OBJECTIVES
After reading this chapter students should be able to:
1. Identify the principal types of supporting materials;
2. Describe how to use each type of supporting material effectively in a speech.

3. Using statistics. Have students select a topic that can be supported by statistics and develop a
1 to 2-minute speech to inform. Make it clear that they need to understand the statistics and draw
clear conclusions from their data. After presenting the speech, ask the audience to respond to the
following questions:
a. Were the statistics clear?
b. Did the speaker understand the statistics?
c. Were the statistics related in a meaningful and understandable way?
d. Did the speaker draw a clear conclusion from the data?
4. Video of students. Watch a video with the class of several student speeches that have been
prerecorded. Identify the kinds of supporting materials each student employs in the speech. Do
the speakers mention their sources effectively? How credible are the speeches?
InfoTrac/Library Database Exercise
Using the available databases, have students search in Vital Speeches for several speeches that
include a variety of credible supporting materials. First ask them to identify the name of the
speaker, the title of the speech, the date presented, and the general occasion of the presentation.
Have them analyze the speeches critically to find the following types of supporting materials:
