OBJECTIVES
After reading this chapter students should be able to:
1. Describe the types of audiovisual aids;
3. Describe the guidelines for using audiovisuals effectively in a speech.
Note: This chapter can be assigned to coincide with Chapter 15 which includes a comprehensive discussion of the
demonstration speech.

3. Critically thinking about visuals. Divide your class into several small groups. Select a topic
from current events that can be enhanced by the use of several visual aids described in this
4. Statistical visual. Ask students to choose topics for a 2-minute informative speech that can be
supported with statistics. To get some ideas, have them consult sources such as Information
Please Almanac, The World Almanac, or Vital Statistics of the United States. Have them plan
5. Special PowerPoint project. Assign a special project to a student who has the capability of
generating computer graphics or who has advanced knowledge of the PowerPoint program. Ask
the student to demonstrate three dimensional designs, movable video, and/or graphic animation.
This project can help students not only learn how to use a program, but also how to use a
computer with a projector to enhance a speech.
InfoTrac/Library Database Exercise
Ask students to use their library databases to search in Government Computer News for the
article, “At Work or at Play, Here are 25 Tips for Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” by
Michael Cheek. Have them answer the following questions about the article:
