CITATION: American Association of Colleges of Nursing. (2013). Public health:
Recommended baccalaureate competencies and curricular guidelines for public health
nursing. Retrieved from http://www.aacn.nche.edu/education-resources/BSN-

OVERVIEW: With the challenges of the 21st century of expanding public health needs
and changes in the U.S. healthcare system due to the Affordable Care Act of 2010
(ACA), nursing education needs to increase its emphasis on public/community nursing in
its curricula and in its learning strategies. The goal needs to be to better prepare nurses to
practice in the public/community settings to ensure that these services are effective and
efficient and meet the quality aims (Institute of Medicine, 2001, pp. 5–6).
2. Effective: Providing services based on scientific knowledge (evidence-based
3. Patient centered: Providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual
4. Timely: Reducing waits and harmful delays for both those who receive and those
who give care
6. Equitable: Providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal
characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic
status (disparity concern)
With this comes more emphasis on wellness, promotion of health, and prevention of
disease, all areas that nurses can actively participate in.
APPLICATION: This AACN supplement to the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate
Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008) provides recommendations to nursing
undergraduate faculty with resources and curriculum suggestions to assist in introducing
population health into baccalaureate curricula.
