THEORIES IN COMBINATION

Discuss Turner and Lapan’s integrative theory, which makes use of social cognitive career theory,
vocational identity (Vondracek), trait and factor theory, Gottfredson’s theory, and Super’s theory. Is that a
good combination? Would you use this in counseling?
Model counseling by using more than one theory at a time with a student “client.” (This will work best
with trait and factor or developmental theories.) Assign small groups of class members to listen for one
theory while another group listens to identify constructs from another theory, etc. This will illustrate how
several theories can be used to conceptualize counseling issues.
Discuss how different career development theories can be applied to conceptualizing different career
placement issues such as networking, job search strategies, and job interviewing.
Discuss when and why certain classification systems would be most helpful in career counseling.
