CHAPTER 11
CONSTRUCTIVIST AND NARRATIVE APPROACHES TO
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Discuss with the class constructivism and the philosophy of modernism. How is constructivism similar to
or different from the theories that have been studied to this point?
Have students use the life designing concept of Savickas to discuss their careers using construction,
deconstruction, reconstruction, and co-construction of a micronarrative (pp. 296-297).
Have the class describe career counseling from a narrative perspective using terms from literature. Do
students think this perspective is helpful? Why or why not?
In pairs, have one student tell an anecdote while the other helps the first student see how it fits in with a
career pattern (pp. 300).
In pairs, have students develop titles for important chapters in their lives. Have their partners ask about
their meaning. Titles should be unique or distinctive (p. 302).

Describe how Savickas’s social constructionist theory views Holland’s theory differently than trait and
factor theory does (pp. 306, 307)
In small groups, have students discuss their early recollections. See if students can find themes that fit
their early recollections (p. 311).
Compare the five major life tasks described by Savickas to the life roles explained by Super (p. 311).
