CHAPTER 10
ADULT CAREER CRISES AND TRANSITIONS
Ask the class to identify career crises and transitions in their own lives. Are these crises and transitions
anticipated, unanticipated, chronic hassles, or non-events (pp. 264-265)? Are the transitions voluntary or
involuntary?
Schlossberg applies her 4Ss method of dealing with transitions (situation, self, support, and strategies) to
retirement. How would you apply it to another type of transitions? Explain.
If possible, have students discuss the effect of sexual harassment on the career development of others.
(Students should be comfortable in doing this and be able to disguise the identity of any individuals
discussed.) Did the individual go through stages of crisis similar to those described by Hopson and
Adams?
Depending on the emphasis of the course, it may be helpful for students, in pairs, to role play dealing with
a career crisis. The "client" can present a crisis of a particular type. The "counselor" can try to apply
Hopson and Adams's conceptual model to it. If students have few counseling skills, this exercise may be
inappropriate.
