ETHICAL ISSUES AND MICROCULTURES
Below are some situations for your students to consider that take into account concepts from
Chapter Three.
1. There has been considerable debate among Americans and even among members of the U.S.
Congress and Senate that English should be the official language of the United States and that
members of the above-profiled microcultures should be required to speak English, especially
when engaged in civil and legal affairs. What do you think? Should English be the official
language of the United States?
2. Some people argue that most members of the above microcultures are not doing enough to
assimilate, take in, absorb, and become a part of U.S. culture. Do you think microcultures
should do more to assimilate to the dominant U.S. culture? Or should microcultures hold on to
the traditions and customs of their microculture?
3. Do you think microcultures have essentially the same goals and aspirations as any group, but
just pursue them differently than the dominant cultural group?
