22. List and define the three different types of plagiarism.
Patchwork plagiarism is constructing a complete speech that you present as your own from
portions of several different sources. Global plagiarism is stealing an entire speech from a
single source and presenting it as your own. Incremental plagiarism is presenting select
portions from a single speech as your own.

23. Discuss how you might use your own personal knowledge and experience to help you gather research for a speech.
This knowledge can come from the students’ own experiences and training, their family
background, hobbies, job or profession, and things they might have read or observed. If the
chosen topic is interesting but the student does not have personal experience with it, suggest
they gain the personal experience as part of their research.

Use your personal knowledge and experience
24. Imagine that you had the opportunity to interview anyone in the world for your next speech. Whom would you
interview? How would you prepare for the interview? For each step in the process, include an example of how you might
execute that step for the specific interviewee you chose. (Note: be sure to give the person’s name and their relationship to
your topic.)
Students should pick an interviewee, then follow the guidelines presented in the book. Their
examples should include some connection between the action they take and the identity of the
interviewee. They might choose a celebrity, a politician, or even a family member.

25. Robert has chosen to do research for a speech on how to support programs for homeless veterans in his city. His
audience will be students, parents, and teachers from his high school who want to learn more about this issue. Some
audience members might also be interested in raising money for this cause.
What are at least three kinds of research you would suggest he include in his speech? What advice or caution might you
give him about these kinds of research?
Students should respond based on the guidelines in the text, including determining types of
information needed, using personal knowledge and experience, identifying technology to be
used, searching for information on the Internet and the library, and conducting personal
interviews. In addition, Robert should review the research tips listed in the textbook, along
with suggestions from the professor.
