Chapter 6: Revealing and Hiding Ourselves: Self-Disclosure and Privacy
1. Think about times when you felt uncomfortable because you engaged in too much or too little self-
disclosure. What circumstances caused you to feel uncomfortable? In other words, how does self-
disclosure disrupt relationships in some cases and benefit relationships in others?
2. Considering the dimensions of self-disclosure, in what ways does frequency actually matter? Have you
ever had a relationship where valence and veracity were not affected by frequency? Where the depth
and breadth replaced the amount of time spent with the person?
3. Based on the results of the questionnaire regarding your attitude toward online communication, how
does online communication change your relationships for the better? For worse? In what ways does
online communication strengthen or weaken your ties to people or groups?
4. Consider some commonly avoided topics or something kept secret? In what ways have you been
conflicted when you have found out information that is typically avoided, or someone asked you to keep
a secret? What did you do? How did you maintain the relationship? What were your motivations for the
decision you made? How did the situation resolve itself? How did you feel immediately afterward, after
some time had passed, and now given what you’ve learned about interpersonal communication?
