Chapter 3: Drawing People Together: Forces of Social Attraction
1. Think about three people in your social network. Recall from Chapter 1 the types of relationships
(role, interpersonal, and close). What initially attracted you to these people? How do types of attraction
affect how we might approach someone or how we might integrate them into our lives?
2. Reflect on the adages, birds of a feather flock together (similarity) and “opposites attract”
(complementary). Describe a circumstance or an environment when you have observed people engaged
in these actions. How do these situations and factors influence attraction in different social
environments?
3. Consider a relationship that is brand new. What ways has this person influenced you? Now consider
this question with an established relationship. How did similarity and complementary attributes evolve
from your initial attraction, interaction, and commitment to the relationship?
4. This chapter also discussed the importance of proximity in the attraction process. In long-distance
relationships, the lack of proximity often affects the relationship. How has social media and technology
changed the typical understandings of “absence makes the heart grow fonder” or “out of sight means
out of mind?
