Chapter 9: Communicating Sexually: The Closest Physical Encounter
1. What role does sex play in relationships? What aspects do hookups, friends with benefits, cyber-
sexuality, or sex in the long term play in the development of a healthy relationship?
2. What strategies do you use to protect yourself from sexual coercion or harassment? Why do people
misinterpret supposed sexual cues so often? What cultural issues serve as barriers to understanding
consent?
3. How do you understand safe or unsafe sex? Why do you think people practice unsafe sex even though
they know the risks involved? What communication strategies might partners use to ensure that they
engage in safe sex?
4. Suppose you were asked to present information on sexual communication to a group of high school
students and parents. How might you share the culture of sex? How might you share the role of
consent? What information would be important to share with them? What sources might you use (other
than your communication course materials) to help your audience understand sex and how it is
portrayed by the media?
5. Where can we go to get more information about developing sexual attitudes? In what ways do
culture, media, parents/guardians, and peers get our sexual attitudes and beliefs correct? Incorrect?
When are these (mis)understandings acceptable and unacceptable?
