Chapter 7: Communicating Closeness: Affection, Immediacy, and Social Support
1. In what ways can physical, emotional, and relational closeness seem similar to each other in how they
communicate within a relationship?
2. What distinctions can you make between affection and immediacy? Where would we see these
distinctions in relationships? In what ways are affection and immediacy misunderstood for seeming
similar? What are your expectations for interactions/situations, where immediacy and affection can be
identified?
3. How have you experienced affection exchange theory? What benefits have you carried between your
relationships? In what ways have you brought harm or negative perceptions of your relationships?
4. In what way do you use depth of disclosure to stimulate immediacy or closeness in your
relationships?
5. Make a list of various relationship indicators you have experienced or use to demonstrate affection,
arousal, or support. Did you experience or use visual/oculesics, haptics, proxemics, kinesics, or vocalics,
or some combination of those behaviors?
