Teaching Children to Select Good Friends. In Hutchison’s book, we learn that school-age
children possess close friendships based on the emotional support provided, as well as
common interests and activities. Violations of trust during this period are often perceived as
serious violations of the friendship bond. Helping children make positive choices by
teaching them about the characteristics of good friends is important. Following is a list of
characteristics of good friends:
• They do not bully other children.
• They are kind to animals and younger children.
Activity 2: Helping Children With ADHD Make Friends
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can affect children in their behavior, such as paying
attention, not talking too much, and moving around too much. It can also affect the way
they make friends. Having good friends decreases risk and builds resilience. Following is a
list of ways parents, teachers, social workers, and many others can help children with ADHD
make friends:
• Build on the child’s interest by finding activities that involve them with their peers.
