Lesson 22.1: Mental Health Specialists, Tests, Clinical
Symptoms, and Disorders
LECTURE OUTLINE (20 min)
SLIDES 6-23 (pp. 921-958)
• Differentiates between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and other mental health
specialists.
• Describes tests used by clinical psychologists to evaluate a patient’s mental health and
intelligence.
• Identifies terms that describe psychiatric symptoms and major psychiatric disorders.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES (choose one or more to equal 30 min)
ASSESS BASELINE (20 min)
• Have class members complete the Pretest and the Background Assessment. Collect
PRESENT (30 min)
• Have students research the other types of mental health professionals (psychiatric
social workers, mental health technicians, etc.) and report their findings to the class.
POST & COMMENT
• Divide the class into groups. Have students research the variety of psychological
testing that may be used to evaluate a patient’s mental health and intelligence. Ask
each group to post and comment on one new test, describing it and possible results.
• Appropriate Settings: Traditional classroom, flipped classroom, hybrid course, online
DEMONSTRATE (10 min)
• Review Figure 22-1 (Rorschach test). Do a demonstration with ink and paper on how to
get an image. Have students describe the images that come out on the paper. As an
extra credit assignment, have students conduct Internet research on this topic and
report how the test is used in clinical practice.
• Appropriate Settings: Traditional Classroom, flipped classroom
DISCUSS (25 min)
• Ask students to use the Internet to answer the following questions: What is the
distribution of blood types among the general U.S. population? World population? Does
it differ by race or ethnicity? If so, why? Have them report their results to the class.
