E. HARMONIZING MELODIES
1. For each of the melodic fragments below, suggest three different bass lines, along
with Roman numerals, that might be used to harmonize the melody.
• The harmonies for each should form a Tonic–Dominant–Dominant–Tonic
progression or a Tonic–Subdominant–Dominant–Tonic progression.
• Do not fill in the inner voices.
2. Harmonize the melodies. Each note of the melody should be harmonized with a
separate chord.
• First label the scale degrees. Notice any scale-degree patterns that might sug-
gest a standard harmonization.
