Evidence for Effective Leadership and Management
Citation: Fowler, F., Levin, C., & Sepucha, K. (2011). Informing and involving patients
to improve the quality of medical decisions. Health Affairs, 30(4), 699–706.
Overview: Quality care requires both use of appropriate and effective procedures,
treatments, and diagnostic tests, but also should involve a well-informed patient to
support patient-centered care. The patient is not always given the option to participate in
decision making and may not be informed enough to do so. There need to be more
incentives for providers to ensure that the patient is informed and participates if the
patient chooses to do so. This article looks at methods and tools used to meet this
important goal.
Application: Shared decision making must be part of effective care. To accomplish this,
healthcare providers need more information about patient understanding and how to
integrate the patient into decision making. With the growing use of healthcare
technology, there are many more methods for accomplishing this goal.
