Overview: Healthcare organization boards are the top-level decision-making body for
healthcare organizations. Nurses have slowly developed as leaders in healthcare
organizations starting with positions as director of nursing and moving to positions of
leadership that are responsible for more than just nursing services. Are nurse leaders
ready for the next step?
Application: What do nurse leaders need to do to become more active on healthcare
organization boards and to be stronger participants? If one accepts that nurses need to be
leaders in continuous quality improvement, then this should have an impact on all levels
of healthcare organizations.
