Application Exercises:

Use of technology in healthcare varies from community to community. You have
probably noticed that some healthcare organizations use technology more than others.
Use of the computer has become very common, although some HCOs still have a long
way to go in how the computer is used. What is used in your community? The class
might want to develop a list of HCOs and a survey that would include the common types
of technology that might be used today. Then find out what is used in the healthcare
organizations: What type of technology is used, by whom, and why? What is the patient
population? What is the value of its use? Ask nurses in some of the healthcare
organizations what they think about the HCO’s computer documentation system (if they
have one). What do they see as the pros and cons to using it? You might also ask fellow
students to rate different computer documentation systems that they have used in
different healthcare settings. Your responses will depend on your local HCOs, but it will
probably include use of computers, technology in treatment such as in surgery and other
specialties, telephone, videoconferencing, telehealth, and other methods. Criteria that
might be used to assess effectiveness would be initial cost, maintenance cost, training
costs, error rate, safety issues, need for backup systems, staff reaction, and so on. (Online
