Overview: Transformational leadership is an effective leadership style. This author
describes her personal experience in applying transformational leadership and developing
this style so she can be an effective leader.
Application: Applying transformational leadership can improve organizations and their
outcomes. Key attributes of transformational leaders are self-knowledge, expertise,
authenticity, flexibility, vision, charisma, shared leadership, and the ability to inspire and
motivate followers (Ward, 2002). Understanding what these mean and how to develop
them is critical for nurse leaders in today’s healthcare environment.
