How To Use This Guide
With this guide, you can easily map Lessons forthe CompTIA Network+ N10-007 Cert Guide (ISBN:
9780789759625) for use in your courses. Use this in conjunction with the provided PowerPoint slide
decks to enhance the classroom experience for your students.
For each chapter, the core concept should be the main focus of student learning in that chapter. A
number of activities relating to each section of the text are also provided. Feel free to use or modify any
of these to fit your classroom style and your class size.
Arguably one of the best communicators of our time, Andy Stanley advocates the use of a single idea as
the basis of any message you deliver; everything else should be attached to it and directed back to that
one core idea. One way to think of each classroom session is with the model of a solar system. The core
The constructivist approach to education specifies primarily that when students participate in the
discovery or expansion of knowledge, they are more likely to retain it than by any other means of
delivery. Also, human retention is structured such that three repetitions or more make the cognitive
transition from short-term memory to long-term memory. This guide is organized to provide you with
activities to engage learners and focus on the relevance of each activity to the overall classroom and
repeat the key ideas to create a successful learning environment. Include as many reinforcement
activities (from the list or from your own creation) as possible to reiterate the main ideas of the
Each chapter guide contains the following elements:
Core Idea: This is the main idea to which all other ideas should be tied. Make a conscious effort
to reiterate this idea multiple times throughout the lesson. This is the idea to which you should relate
the other activities and discussions as well. This is usually closely aligned with the Network+ objectives
for each chapter.
Instructor Focus: This is a description of the critical information that instructors should be
prepared to help students learn from the topic. This is reinforced by any activities, lectures, and
discussions you present.
Network+ Objectives for each chapter: Your contract to teach obligates you to assist students
to learn the objectives they may face on their exam. Writing these objectives on a whiteboard,

discussing them prior to a presentation, or referring to them within a lesson validates that you are
delivering the content as promised. The objectives are usually closely aligned with the Core Idea, though
some objectives may be tangential to it.
Icebreaker Discussion (3–5 minutes): This is the initial discussion you should have with your
students for each lesson. This is a good discussion to start as people are entering the room and getting
settled. It is left to your personal style whether you want to call out individual students or allow the
discussion to proceed on a volunteer basis. Allow pauses in the discussion as long as the intention to
continue is clear; this will force students to think more actively and creatively to come up with a
contribution. This discussion should be 3 to 5 minutes. You may want to write these on the board before
the class starts.
Icebreaker Activity (5–10 minutes): This should be the initial activity that you conduct with your
students. Allow them several minutes to complete the activity; this should have a deliverable that you
may or may not grade. In either case, it should provide you with an understanding of the student’s
background on the topic and provides you with a chance to give an initial overview of the topic.
Network Simulator Activities have been referenced throughout this guide. Their placement in
each chapter is a suggested place to use them. Use your own judgement. They will add depth and
content mastery. Pausing during longer lectures to allow time for these activities can enhance the value
of the presentation and strengthen the attachment of concepts to long term memory.
Quiz Questions (5–10 minutes): Quizzes not only verify that learning has taken place, they serve
as a means of learning. A series of short quiz questions are included at the end of each chapter. Since
they are in this guide and not available to students, a good review for the students would be for you to
verbally cover them and talk about why one answer is favored over another. They provide an
