This Case Project assumes a modern version of Ubuntu and the default bash shell, but the basic network diagnostic
commands should work with any Linux distro and shell.
The Ping utility works pretty much the same on Linux and Mac OS X as it does on Windows, with one notable
difference. On Windows, by default, the ping command responds only four times and stops while on Linux and
Mac, the ping persists until either you press Ctrl+C, or you close the shell.
The Ifconfig utility returns information on the various network interfaces on a Linux computer including eth0, the
