Hands-On Projects Discussion
Hands-On Project 11-1
In this project, the students log into a live route server hosted by a tier 1 service provider. They will run several
show commands to get current information about the Internet routing.
Students running Windows 7 or Windows 10 may need to install/enable Telnet on their computers to access route-
server.ip.att.net. In addition, if route-server.ip.att.net is not available, pick a different server from
http://www.bgp4.as/looking-glasses or http://www.traceroute.org/#Route-Servers, and give the address to the
students.
Begin by explaining the purpose of route servers. As explained in the textbook, route servers are used by network
engineers at both customer sites and other ISPs for troubleshooting purposes and gathering generic information.
Most route servers for internal use are Linux-based servers, so the route information exists in text files and can be

Hands-On Project 11-2
This activity requires students to run several different show commands to explore the configuration.
The netsh interface ipv6 show interface command displays all interfaces, unless you specify an
interface within the command. Students must report the number of tunneling pseudo interfaces created
automatically by Windows.
The netsh interface ipv6 show address displays the addresses for each interface. Students must
determine whether their IPv6 addresses are built using their hardware MAC address. Some addresses are built by
Case Projects Discussion
Case Project 11-1
The students bill of materials should include the routers and switches of their choice. Brand isnt important but
the quantity of devices should be sufficient to create a reasonably complex network. They should also include
servers and client devices such as laptops, phones, and so on. Comprehensive labs would also include security
Case Project 11-2
In this project, students should describe a plan that includes an evaluation phase where devices are inventoried and
studied and where a detailed plan would be created, followed by a design phase that specifies the networking
details including which technologies (tunneling, translation, dual-stack, etc.) would be used, and a testing phase,
and then an implementation phase. For full credit, students should recognize that in the sample organization, this
process may take three years to implement, and thus point out some aspect of their plan that satisfies the urgency
