PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
KEY CONCEPTS
Organizing for personnel management involves deciding what jobs must be done, what
skills or training are required, and how those jobs relate to one another.
Staffing consists of developing procedures for recruiting, selecting and retaining
employees to do the various jobs.
Job design is the process of laying out job responsibilities and duties and describing how
they are to be performed.
Job specification is used to advertise the position; it specifies required training,
experience, personal characteristics and physical abilities as well as responsibilities.
Job classification ranks a position based on qualifications and level of supervision
required.
Job coordination spells out the level of responsibility and authority for each position in
relation to the others.
Span of control refers to the number of subordinates reporting to a manager or the
number of children and families assigned to a teacher.
