1. Explain the six key traits for successful leaders.

Chapter Outline

I. Introduction

A. Important leadership traits include diligence, trustworthiness, dependability,

articulateness, sociability, open-mindedness, intelligence, confidence, self-

assurance, and conscientiousness.

II. Leadership Traits Explained

A. Results of studies conducted to identify the traits of effective leaders have

produced a very long list of important leadership traits; each of these traits

contributes to the leadership process.

i. Confident people feel self-assured and believe they can accomplish their

goals. They feel strong and secure about their positions, move forward and

feel a sense of certainty and believe that they are doing the right thing.

F. Charisma

i. Charisma refers to a leader’s special magnetic charm and appeal, and can

have a huge effect on the leadership process. It gives the leader exceptional

powers of influence.

G. Determination

i. Determined leaders are very focused and attentive to tasks.

a. They know where they are going and how they intend to get there.

ii. Determination is the decision to get the job done.

H. Sociability

i. Sociability refers to a leader’s capacity to establish pleasant social

relationships.

ii. Leaders who show sociability are friendly, outgoing, courteous, tactful,

and diplomatic.

iii. Some individuals are naturally “people persons,” while others prefer to be

alone.

i. Integrity characterizes leaders who possess the qualities of honesty and

trustworthiness.

and candid and monitoring what is appropriate to disclose in a

i. Winston Churchill’s leadership was remarkable because it emerged from a

man who was average in many respects and who faced challenges in his

personal life.

v. A voracious reader, Churchill was plain speaking, decisive, detail oriented,

and informed.

vi. Furthermore, he was very ambitious, both for himself, but also for his

nation. He evoked strong reactions among his followers.

E. Mother Teresa (1910–1997)

i. Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work with

the poor and helpless in Kolkata, India, and throughout the world.

i. Mother Teresa was a simple woman of small stature who dressed in a plain

blue and white sari, and who never owned more than the people she served.
