Conclusion
Lead a class discussion and/or make concluding remarks. I ask the class, who wants to be a
millionaire? Then, I put this example on the board illustrating that they can become
millionaires at retirement:
Assumptions:
Your rate of return is 10% compound cumulative so that every 7 years your money will
double. You save $2,000 at age 22.
Question: Based on these assumptions, what will be the value of the retirement account at
age 64?
Answer:
Age $ value With Employer Match
22 2,000 4,000
29 4,000 8,000
Lussier, Human Resources Management 3e
SAGE Publishing, 2019
only $2,000. You can see that if you put away $2,000 every year from age 22 to retirement
being a millionaire at retirement is VERY possible.
I remind student of:
the importance of starting their retirement saving as soon as possible
Remember the “save 10% of your income no matter how low it is” rule. If you get a job
paying $30,000, 10% would be $3,000. So even if you dropped down to $2,000 (6.67%)
every year you can still be a millionaire. Also, remember that the $2,000 saved is not a full
$2,000 out of your paycheck because of the tax saving. You can ask the HR person to do the
calculations for any given amount of pay deduction for retirement effect on your take-home
pay.
Apply It
You can have students answer these questions; it is better if they write them down. What did
I learn from this exercise? How will I use this knowledge in the future?
