Davies: Computer Vision, 5th edition: Solutions to selected problems 45
A.1
(a) The breakdown point is the proportion of a distribution on one side or the other
which can be disregarded by a data analysis method and hence the proportion of the
distribution on either side which can contain outliers or false peaks, etc. It is related to
robustness since robustness is the capability not to be confused by outliers, e.g., in the
form of noise, clutter, breakages or occlusions. (It is worth considering whether this
statement represents a complete definition of robustness.)
(b) It is possible straight away to write down that (1 – )2 = 0.5, since the probability of a
correct solution is the square of the probability of one point not being an outlier.
