Chapter Activities
Chapter 5
The following are activities to practice and hone you skills.
1. Break into small groups. The text emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic reliance and the
ability to provide unconditional positive regard. What if you find it difficult to “like” your client?
What if they remind you of someone from your past? Discuss how these facts may complicate
2. Break into groups of two. Take turns reading the cognitive therapy scripts on pages 93–96 of the
text. Discuss how this is different from your regular social conversation style.
3. Break into small group and discuss how you can tell if someone is “really listening” to you. What
are their eye contact and their posture like? What other qualities do you recognize in an active
listener. When someone responds this way how does it make you feel towards him or her? Is
what you describe similar to what the book describes in this chapter?
