The following are activities to practice and hone you skills.
1. Break into groups of two and take on the role of therapist and client. Read the script of the CBT
session on pages 160162. Can you identify the thinking errors? How is this different from
typical dialogue?
2. The book includes common screening tools for depression (HAM-DAppendix 30) and anxiety
(MAH-AAppendix 64). Break into groups of two and take turns administering these tools to
one another. Discuss the tools in class.
3. Suicide risk should always be taken seriously. The book indicated there is a 15% mean suicide
rate in alcoholics, and even higher in drug dependent persons. It is likely many treatment
counselors will encounter a suicidal client in their careers. What are the resources for suicidal
clients in your city/area? Create a list of local resources for this issue including, but not limited
