Students should have proofread the rough draft of the post against the final copy, made
corrections, and produced a clean copy. The post with corrections highlighted appears on the
next page. Finding the misused verb (bring in two instances where take was needed) was
probably challenging.
The typed copy contains the kinds of errors you might expect when you are typing: one word
keyed where another was meant (They for There), an extra or a missing character (on became
one, and trip became tip), a missing word ending (ed from needed), a mistyped punctuation
mark, and even a missing sentence. Emphasize that not one of these errors would have been
detected by the spell checker. The spell checker is a tool for proofreading but no substitute for
it. Students should always proofread after spell checking.
Students should also have added a few linking words and phrases. These will vary; examples
have been inserted in the solution and highlighted.
