Marlboro College
Case Synopsis and Analysis
From student enrollment numbers dipping, to the 2020 pandemic, to new occupations not
requiring a college degree, to a massive drop in state appropriations, many colleges and
universities struggle to keep their doors open. Marlboro College in rural Vermont is no
different. When faced with either closing their doors or merging with another school, the
campus president faced down this adaptive challenge and convened a community-wide team
to tackle the issue. After many, many meetings and discussions, a potential merger was
announced. All seemed fine until the merger fell through and then the campus community
