Framing Wood Structures
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this exercise is to properly construct
framing for wood structures.
TEXTBOOK REFERENCE
Information related to this activity can be found in the
INTRODUCTION
Two basic choices are available when building the sub-
structure for a deck—traditional post and beam framing
(also called drop beam or plank and beam) or platform
framing (also termed box or flush beam). Post and beam
uses a system of posts to support heavy construction
beams. These beams in turn support structural joists
on-to which the surfacing material is applied. Platform
If using a ledger plate, beam should be hung from
plate using joist hangers.
If resting beam on top of posts, calculate and mark
proper post height. Cut post and rest beam on
top. Fasten using a single saddle connector or
bolts.
Recheck framework for square and proper level.

Construct rim joist platform frame and attach to
posts or structure.
