To complete this exercise perform area calculations for
each of the shapes shown in Lab Manual Figure 1–8. Place
your responses in the form in Lab Manual Figure 1–9.
• 1 inch thick layer of concrete sand, express
answers in cubic yards (CY)
• 2 inch thick layer of mulch, express answers in
cubic feet (CF)
• 4 inch thick layer of concrete, express answers in
cubic yards (CY)
• 6 inch thick layer of aggregate base material,
express answers in cubic yards (CY)
• 8 inch thick layer of dry, loose soil, express
answers in cubic yards (CY)
• Locate a site or construction plans from which
students can perform item counts. Select three
to four items from the site or plans that students
should identify and count.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THIS EXERCISE
To adapt math calculations to practical applications,
obtain a set of construction plans and perform the afore-
mentioned calculations for areas within the drawing.
Calculations can be performed for paved areas, turf and
planted areas, and wall areas.
