Chapter 27
General Comments:
In the first printing of the third edition, “the ethylbenzene process” appears twice. It will be
removed in subsequent printings.
The suggestions that follow are just a few ideas. The overall themes are:
a. Heat integration saves energy, and is green.
27.1 ethylbenzene
reduce benzene loss – recover from fuel-gas stream – benzene is made from toluene,
which is isolated from a refinery cut
27.2 styrene
recycle waste water, purify it (necessary because it might contain some organic residues),
and use it to make steam for the process feed
27.3 maleic anhydride
27.4 ethylene oxide
recycle waste water to absorber feeds
27.5 formalin
heat integration – use Stream 9 to preheat fired-heater feed to reduce energy use and
27.6 Ethylbenzene – same as 27.1
27.7 DME
27-3
27.8 acetone
recycle waste water to absorber feed
There is no need to purify the IPA/water stream for recycle in T-403 to the level shown.
