In the nineteenth century, composers began to write works for the concert hall that
incorporated musical devices associated with folk music. When he lived in the United

A native of Prague, Dvo ák travelled to the United States on a two-year contract to direct
the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. In 1893, he summered in
Spillville, Iowa a town of 350 inhabitants, many of whom came from Dvo
Bohemia. Inspired by his new surroundings, he wanted to write a simple melody, but
this ballooned into his string
In the third movement, Dvo ák replicated call-and-response, a basic element of
