CHAPTER TEACHING FOCUS
In this chapter, the student will be introduced to physical and chemical barriers, the signs and
symptoms of inflammation including how inflammatory changes act as bodily defense mechanisms,
and the process of repair and healing.
Students will examine the differences between inflammation and infection; the signs, symptoms, and
transmission of infections; the actions of commonly found infectious agents; the differences between
community-acquired and nosocomial infections; and the nursing care for patients with infections.
