4. Teaching scheme
Pre-reading: it is suggested that students read Chapter 4 of Exploring Strategy, in particular, in
Case preparation
Students should read the case itself, their own role and the role of all other characters prior to
the class for three reasons.
1. It allows them to think themselves into the role they are to play, and be prepared to argue
the case from that point of view.
With this in mind, it is important that tutors choose the allocation of roles carefully to ensure
that the points of view expressed by those involved achieve airtime in the session. If there is
more than one group, it is also possible to assign roles to see to what extent different personal
styles influence discussion and outcome (e.g. one group could have a dominant Derek and
another a more passive one; one group a strong chair and another less so).
The class itself might then be as follows:
1. Unless it has been covered elsewhere on the course, it may be useful to hold a brief class
discussion on corporate governance prior to the role play to ensure students understand the
concepts.
