Overview. An overview is included as a summary of the chapter’s contents. It also
makes a good review instrument.
Student Objectives and Skills Evaluation. A particular challenge in interpersonal
communication courses is the evaluation of a student’s development of skills. Some
can be graded “holistically” and others list criteria and items for evaluation.
Chapter Outline. The outline can serve as a foundation for lecture planning, and
organizes major chapter topics and key points.
Teaching Strategies. Each chapter offers several teaching strategies that you may
include in your overall teaching design. You will find several original strategies and
exercises for each chapter. At the end of each chapter, you will find forms to
Vignette. Most chapters include a vignette taken directly from the previous edition of
DeVito’s Interpesonal Messages. For some of you, the anecdotes and fables may
prove useful as ways of introducing the various topics discussed in the text and in
the course.
Activities for Student-Based Learning. Each chapter contains a minimum of two

Designing your class syllabus is an important part of teaching the course. A good
syllabus describes the course and the instructional goals, explains assignments and
grading, articulates any special policies pertinent to the class, and describes the
schedule of classes and readings.
Following are two class schedules. The first schedule shows a semester-long course
that meets for a 50-minute period 3 days a week for 14 weeks. The second schedule
presents a quarter-long course that meets for a 50-minute period 5 days a week for 10
weeks. Both schedules can be adapted.
