Chapter 8: Group Communication
1. Symbolic convergence theory highlights the strength of storytelling in small
groups. Is it possible for certain stories to reduce the morale of the group and lead
to negative outcomes? Explain.
2. The chapter explains how useful adaptive structuration theory is for virtual groups.
Of the other three theories in this chapter, which do you think would also be useful
for virtual groups? Why?
3. It is important for the entire group to be vigilant when ensuring groupthink is not
occurring. However, what can the individual do to monitor for groupthink?
4. After studying the various theories about group decision making in this chapter,
why DO some groups make good decisions and others make bad ones? What can
you, as a communication scholar, do to help address this reality on a societal level?
5. Group projects are a natural part of the college experience. How can you apply
what you’ve learned about group communication in this chapter to your next group
project? How can it help you have a positive experience?
