Discussion Questions
Chapter 5: Interpersonal Communication
1. In Chapter 1 you learned about internal consistency, which suggests that theories
within the same context should have similarities. In what ways do you see internal
consistency with the four theories in this chapter?
2. The premise of dialectics theory suggests that these tensions are irresolvable,
which could shatter the image of a “romantic ending.” How do you see this theory
as being not only practical but helpful to our perception of relationships amid
ongoing tensions?
3. People can be very dismissive of young people in love for the first time (e.g., we
use terms like “puppy love”). Use concepts from politeness theory to explain why
we should be more understanding with people who are having their hearts broken
for the first time. How can we help them save face as they go through the process
of heartbreak?
4. You spent a great deal of time and money finding the perfect birthday gift for
your best friend. When you give it to them, their reaction is not what you
expected. You are upset that they weren’t more excited. How would Social
Exchange Theory explain your reaction?
5. You landed your dream interview. You are prepared and ready for anything. The
first part of the interview is perfect. You have a real connection with the
interviewer. The interviewer wants you to talk with another supervisor on the
team. There is no connection with this person, and they ask you several
inappropriate questions. On your way out, you run into the first person who
interviewed you. They ask you how it went. What do you say? What principles of
CPM influence your decision?
