This chapter describes strategies to inform others in briefings, reports, public relations
presentations, and training sessions; strategies to persuade and make sales presentations
to others; and special occasion speaking situations.

13.1 Informing Others
1. How can speaking to inform others be a
challenging task? Discuss the principles of
informing others in briefings, reports, and public
relations presentations.
2. Analyze the significance of each of the nine steps
of the need-centered training model.
13.2 Persuading Others
1. Consider the last time you had to persuade
someone to your point of view. How was it
different from informing a person? Discuss the
principles that explain how persuasion works.
2. Assess the strategies one must follow when
persuading others. How should one develop sales
messages to motivate a customer into buying
specific products?
13.3 Making Special
Presentations
1. In what ways is presenting an award similar to
introducing a speaker or a guest? Discuss the
points one should keep in mind while preparing a
speech when presenting an award.
2. Reflect on a recent award acceptance speech.
Examine the points the person included and
missed out in the speech. Why is proposing a
toast important in a business or professional
setting?
Research Assignments
The following research assignments pertain to the main topics and/or themes of the chapter.
Please respond by writing a paper consisting of 1,000-1,500 words.
Logical Fallacies
Write a report analyzing the various types of reasoning fallacies, and explain each one of
them by citing relevant examples. Examine why one should have a working knowledge of

To have the students become familiar with the motivated sequence format

Group size
This speech is done individually so the student may find a topic he/she is passionate
about or they could be selling a product or service.
Time required
Procedure
1. Hand out and review motivated sequence format.
3. Have students write a persuasive speech in full sentence outline format with in text
citations and a bibliography with a minimum of three credible sources.
5. Students should design presentational aids for this speech.
