Chapter 1: Introduction to Communication Theory
1. It is not necessary to have all five criteria for evaluating theory in order for a
theory to be labeled “good.” Which criteria should be the focus? Is there one
criterion that is imperative to establishing whether a theory is good or not?
2. What is the benefit of exploring specific contexts of communication as opposed to
providing one standard definition? How is this related to what people think about
the communication process?
3. Why do people use the phrase, “In theory, this should work…”? What does this
imply about theory? After reading the chapter, how would you explain the
usefulness of theory?
4. How can the study of communication theory make someone a more competent
communicator? What role do effectiveness and appropriateness play in
competency?
5. Think about the concept of eavesdropping. You hear to a message that was not
intended for you. Is this “communication”? How would you explain the concepts
of receiver-orientation and intentionality in this specific situation?
