1. The Excel files, by default, are created to provide students with immediate feedback. If
they input an incorrect number, an asterisk appears to the right of the answer cell.
2. In addition, tooltip boxes provided additional information to assist students in
successfully completing their assignments.

3. A Score line updates as students work the exercise/problem, indicating their percentage
correct.
If students are experiencing difficulty, the asterisks highlight where they need to focus

4. At the instructor’s option, the “instant feedback” and scoring features may be turned off. The
Score line will not display nor will asterisks appear for incorrect answers.
To remove the instant feedback, an instructor can download the selected (student) Excel files,
turn off the feedback feature and then make these file(s) available to students. Students can
then complete the spreadsheet homework, perform a Save As, and then email the file to the
instructor. The instructor can then turn the grading feature back on, viewing where a
student’s errors occurred (the asterisks will appear) and inputting the percentage correct (the
score line re-displays) in the grade book.
To remove the feedback feature, follow the steps below.
a) Each Excel template file has been protected to ensure that the setup of the spreadsheet
cannot be changed. First, you will need to turn off the protection. From the main menu,

f) Note that the word “Score” and the sentence “An asterisk (*) will appear to the right of
an incorrect entry” no longer displays.
g) From the main menu, select Tools/Protection/Protect Sheet…
h) In the entry field designated with the red arrow, type grading (case sensitive).
i) Click OK.

l) From the main menu, click File/Save
OR
Click the Save icon ( )
m) Now you can send your students the file, asking that they complete the assigned exercise.
Upon completion, the file is returned to you.
5. Once a file is returned, execute the steps below to turn the grading feature back on. This will
quickly grade a student’s work.
a) First the worksheet protection should be turned off.

g) Note that the word “Score” and the sentence “An asterisk (*) will appear to the right of
an incorrect entry” re-display. The student’s score as well as asterisks indicating incorrect
answers will appear.

k) Enter the password (grading) again in the Renter password to proceed entry field.
