1. Discuss how unique cultural patterns developed in the United States, a country of immigrants from
other nations. Examine specific examples.
2. Choose each of the “problems” from Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s value orientation theory and
consider how you personally would answer each question. How does this relate to the culture (and
subcultures) you are a part of?
3. Outline the positive and negative consequences that have resulted from each of the U.S. value
orientations.
4. What do you believe is the most significant U.S. cultural pattern in the intercultural communication
context?
5. Analyze the implications of the development of a dominant U.S. culture and of a fragmenting national
culture.
