Chapter 9: Work
Instructors are provided with two sets of questions to engage students: discussion questions
(provided in the text) and reading questions (provided below).
1. What are some ways our culture teaches us that “hard work pays”?
2. What are some ways you have been encouraged to pursue or discouraged from pursuing
different jobs based on sex/gender?
3. Why do you think women don’t negotiate pay? How do you think this issue ought to be
addressed?
4. What organizational and structural norms limit pay equity and promote job segregation?
5. Where and how have you been taught that emotions are unprofessional?
