Chapter 12: One Last Look Through a Critical Gendered Lens
Instructors are provided with two sets of questions to engage students: discussion questions
(provided in the text) and reading questions (provided below).
1. Offer an example of
a. how the male and masculine persist as the default;
b. the importance of patterns of systemic bias;
c. how binary gender/sex differences are reinforced through communication; and
d. how seemingly innocent practices affect children’s perceptions of themselves and
others.
2. Over the course of the semester, have you found yourself noticing new things about
gender/sex due to having developed a critical gendered lens? If so, offer an example.
3. List three consequences of current cultural constructions of identity with regard to
gender/sex.
