Communication: A Critical/Cultural Introduction, 2e Warren & Fassett
Chapter 12: Communication as a Means of Social Action
Discussion Questions
1. What are some of the ways you feel western culture disciplines you to behave a certain
way? In what ways do you choose to contradict, navigate, or negotiate those disciplining
messages?
2. What images do you see (on television, billboards, movies, music videos, etc.) that cause
you to ask “why that __________?” In what ways does that image lead to a desire to
combat everyday oppressions (i.e. sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism, etc.)?
3. What oppressive messages are you an advocate against? When pushing against those
messages, what sorts of feelings do you experience (exhaustion, cynicism, nihilism), and
how do you negotiate and recover from them?
4. How have you used communication to produce change? How can you use it in this class,
your presentations, and/or papers?
5. Think back on something you have tried to change about yourself, a relationship, or even
a social issue. How difficult was it to make this change (even if it was minor)? Was the
change immediate or slow-moving? How did you feel during the process? After the
process?
