Part V Case Study: LA Clippers Introduce New Mascot Chuck the Condor with Chuck Taylor
Giveaway
On February 29, 2016 in Los Angeles, California, a new Clippers fan was welcomed into the world. During
the halftime show of the Clippers-Brooklyn Nets game at Staples Center, the new Clippers’ mascot,
Chuck the Condor, was lowered from the rafters and introduced to the crowd for the first time.
"It's about developing new fans. The Clippers want to develop young NBA fans." said David Raymond,
who runs Raymond Entertainment, a character-branding and mascot-training company which has
helped create and train more than 100 mascots over the past 20 years. Raymond originated the popular
Phillie Phanatic mascot at Philadelphia Phillies games in 1978 and helped the Clippers select and train
the performer who plays Chuck.
Sporting a blue beak, Clippers jersey #213, and a pair of red high-top Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers,
Chuck electrified the crowd with his half-time tumble display. Team owner Steve Ballmer made the
official introduction, “Chuck is my wingman, and I am pumped that he is officially part of Clipper Nation!
Like me, Chuck loves the Clippers, and I want Clipper Nation to follow Chuck, wear shoes like Chuck, and
cheer like crazy, just like Chuck!”
