Articulation and Resonance Class Activity 2
Visualizing Speech:
This lab allows students to examine their own speech. If you have a portable acoustical analysis
system (such as PRAAT: www.praat.org, or IBM SpeechViewer), you can have a good
demonstration of formant resonances and how they change with articulation. You can enlist
students to serve as speakers for the demonstration, or if you have multiple computers, walk
students through signal collection and analysis in class. You will, no doubt, think of much more
creative things to do but some basic contrasts.
Chapter 7 Lab 1
Your instructor has shown you the details of visualizing your own speech. Get onto the system
and record your own speech using the following stimuli and make the measurements indicated.
1. Voice onset time (VOT): VOT is the time between the release of a stop consonant and the
onset of voicing. Long VOT is perceived as a voiceless stop, whereas short VOT is perceived
as voiced. Record each of these words, identify the burst for the first consonant, and the
measure over to the vowel. Record the VOT.

What can you say about the difference in duration between voiced and voiceless stops?
2. Vowel duration for postvocalic voicing condition: Vowel duration is also a way of marking
voiced and voiceless distinctions, but this time it marks the end phoneme (postvocalic
phoneme). In this case you expect the vowel duration to be longer for postvocalic (after the
vowel) stop consonants. Is it? Record each of these words, find the vowel, and measure its
duration.
What can you say about the difference in duration between vowels preceding voiced and
voiceless stops?
