Phonation Lab 2
Use of Laryngeal Models for Review of Structures
(Model Lab)
To the Instructor:
The following model lab is the best way I know of to provide an overview of the relationships of
muscles and the cartilage. A cadaver lab using actual specimens provides a great orientation, but
laryngeal size is so limiting that models are needed to provide the appropriate detail. Again, a
very useful way of approaching the material is to discuss the material and follow the discussion
with a round-robin point-and-questioning of students. They appreciate having an opportunity to
review what they know, and your verbal quizzing goes a long way toward their active
participation. You may wish to add some of the following images from the Image Library to the
lab guide so that students will have them at hand as a reference in the lab.

4-1 Relationship of laryngeal cartilages
4-2 Cavities of the larynx
4-6 Cricoid cartilage
4-7 Thyroid cartilage
4-8 Cricoid with arytenoids
4-13 Intrinsic muscles of the larynx: Lateral cricoarytenoid, posterior cricoarytenoid,
oblique and transverse arytenoids, cut cricothyroid, aryepiglotticus,
thyroepiglotticus, superior thyroarytenoid
4-15 Cricothyroid pars recta and pars oblique
4-16 Thyrovocalis and thyromuscularis

Use of Laryngeal Models for Review of Structures
(Model Lab)
Study the muscles and cartilages in preparation for discussion during lab. Lab will focus on
origins, insertions, courses, and innervations of the laryngeal structures as well as the cartilaginous
framework. You may want to review the lessons for Chapter 4 in Anatesse related to the laryngeal
mechanism prior to this lab to refresh your memory of the structures and functions.
