Lab 1
Terminology of Orientation and Movement
To the instructor: Terminology can be daunting, so some one-to-one work with students in a lab setting
will help to firm up the notions (and importance) of mastering basic concepts related to terminology in
anatomy. This lab will be terms of orientation, beginning with the anatomical position, planes, and terms
of relationship related to movement and spatial orientation. Repetition helps, of course, but consider
providing them with a gesture that will help lock the concept in. For instance, moving your right hand
laterally down your left arm toward your left hand while saying lateral and have them repeat that
(basically a physical mnemonic).
Figures that will be helpful:
1-1a Anatomical position, terms of orientation
1-1b Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showing planes of orientation
1-1c MRI showing planes of orientation
1-1d MRI showing planes of orientation
1-1e Terms of movement
1-1f Terms of spatial orientation
